Busby's Review: The Cabin In The Woods

If you seen the trailer for this movie you would probably make up your mind about what you think this movie is about.  Let's break it down shall we? 5 friends go on a get away trip to a small cabin in the middle of the woods.  After a while of drinking, pot smoking, sex and having a grand old good time, they quickly realize that they are not alone.  Little do they know, they are being monitored and being used as guinea pigs for a very deadly game. The fun and games turns into running and screaming for their lives as their get away trip becomes a game of survival of the fittest.  Now just based off that synopsis you would think that this is just a regular cliche horror film.  However, that is just a small PART of the puzzle piece.  The bigger picture is a lot more complex then you think, and just when you think you figured out the film, the movie pulls the rug from underneath you.

What we have here is a different type of horror film, Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer)  and Drew Goddard (writer of Cloverfield) wrote a very unique and very intriguing story. It's kind of crazy to believe that this film was made back in 2009, and it took 3 years for it to be released.  I don't want to give away a whole lot of the main plot, because if I do that I kinda ruin the surprise for you.  All I WILL say is that this movie gives an ode to the whole horror movie genre in a very unique way.  It's not really "scary" per say, to be honest it was quite funny. It kind of reminds me of Drag Me To Hell with how much over the top it gets.

Down the line, I can see this film get critiqued by all the horror movie fans because there is a whole lot of references to the whole genre thrown through out the film.  This movie kind of pokes fun at it the same way Wes Craven did in his Scream movies.  Personally, I enjoyed the movie for what it was, it was really smartly written and it was smartly made. The ending really blindsided me, and I REALLY didn't see it coming.  Now for everybody else, honestly you either gonna love it or hate it, no in between.  To be real I HIGHLY advise you to avoid any spoilers for this movie, just go in there with a blind eye and just see how everything goes down, its more enjoyable that way.

To sum it up, this movie is nothing more then a great big metaphor for the entire horror movie genre.  Overall I enjoyed the movie for what it is, just a good old scary good time, a unique one at that.  I had a lot of fun watching it, and I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a cult classic down the line.  Joss Whedon has a very good track record of great material for film and television.  Cabin In The Woods will just be another movie to add to his resume of great material.  Like I stated earlier, you either going to love it or hate it.  Just make up your own mind, either way I guarantee you won't take your eyes off the screen.

Busby's Opinion: 4/5
